In 2012-2013, Notre Dame College won before joining the Mountain East Conference. In 2013-2014 and 2014-2015, the Lake Erie College Storm won the GLIAC Men’s Wrestling Championship. This past season all four teams from The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) showed its strength at the 2015 NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships as Lake Erie, Tiffin, Findlay and Ashland all displayed strong showing in St. Louis at Regionals. Joey Simcoe is in his fourth season as the head wrestling coach at Tiffin University. He is responsible for all aspects of the program. During his tenure the Dragons have qualified eight for nationals and in 2013 had their first ever NCAA All-American with a total of four All-Americans since 2014-2015. Joey has also had success off the mat with a total of fourteen Academic All-Americans. During the 2014-2015 season, Simcoe and company finished ninth in the country - the highest ranking ever in school history. They also finished second in the GLIAC, which was the highest in school history. During this historic season, the wrestling team beat rival University of Findlay, where Joey was a successful student-athlete for four years. Last but not least, the team outplaced all GLIAC and all Super Regional II teams at the National Tournament. Prior to coming to Tiffin, Simcoe spent the last five years as assistant coach under his former head coach Shawn Nelson at The University of Findlay, and most recently with former Roughneck All-American Jarad Swint at Cumberland University (Tenn). As an assistant Simcoe has helped mentor 5 National Champions, 16 All-Americans, and 21 Academic All-Americans. Simcoe graduated with a BA in Criminal Justice from the University of Findlay in 2004, and was named Academic All-American the same year. He was a three time All-American in wrestling and was elected team captain three times. He still ranks among the top all time in near fall points both in a season and career. A 1999 graduate of Northridge High School (Johnstown, Ohio), Joey was a three time State Qualifier and two time State placer, only surrendering four offensive points in his senior season. Tiffin University Wrestling Mission Statement:
The mission of the Tiffin University wrestling team is to provide an avenue for young men to pursue their dreams and goals professionally, academically, and athletically. We will maintain an environment that coincides with the rules and guidelines set forth by the NCAA, and also follow the policies put in place by Tiffin University and the Tiffin Athletic Department, while striving for excellence not only on the mat but in life as well. Tiffin University Athletic Department Mission Statement: The Tiffin University Athletic Department inspires professional excellence by contemplating and supplementing the overall mission of the University through a program of commitment to education, student-athlete welfare, compliance, athletic excellence and all stakeholders including faculty, staff, students, alumni and the community. The Athletic Department's mission of inspiring professional excellence through emphasizing the total development of the student-athlete. This development occurs through the pursuit of excellence in academics, athletics and in character building; ultimately preparing the student-athlete to achieve significance by providing them with the knowledge needed to impact their world through a lifetime relationship with Tiffin University. Tiffin University Men’s Wrestling started its inaugural season in 2009-2010 as a club sport. In 2010-2011, they began the transition into GLIAC play with Doug Jesse at the helm. However, at the time, many GLIAC schools were just starting wrestling. During the 2010-2011 season, the team wrestled to a 10-10-1 record and ended the season tenth out of thirteen teams in the Super Region II event. Fast forward four years later where the program has been successful ever since. Joey Simcoe, my advisor and the current men’s head coach, has taken the program from the bottom to the top in five short years. During his tenure the Dragons have qualified for four nationals and in 2013 had their first ever NCAA All-American. This past season was historic, as the program took major strides when three wrestlers finished 4th at the NCAA Division II National Championships, the highest finish ever for Tiffin University wrestling. Overall, the team finished 9th out of 48 teams, the best finish of any GLIAC team. The future looks bright as men’s wrestling is only losing six seniors and returning a big part of their team’s success from this past season. Tiffin University is a member of Division II of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). They are a full member of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. |
